Artist Statement

I choose to create utilitarian ceramics that embody my values of history, as well as the lives and purposes of hand made objects. I think of the vessels I create as instant heirlooms, existing in their own individual context while carrying a connection to an undiscovered story. They evoke the emotive qualities of life enriched by the environment and domesticity.

Much of my work references the form and function of historical ceramics. Inspired by Dutch tulipieres, flower bricks and planters speak to my objective of communicating the ephemeral and fragility. Flowers are idolized for their beauty and in this context allude to social and cultural hierarchy. In modernity they signify affluence and remain powerful indicators of cultural values.

I am drawn to surface and take an interdisciplinary approach by combining printmaking and hand building techniques. The patterning and imagery on my pots function as iconography, conveying our larger cultural aesthetics. Depictions of tools, animals or influences from childhood are powerful yet playful. These symbols speak to utility and the intimacy of home life. Users access the emotive content of the imagery through the physicality of a functional vessel. In the end my goal is to make successful works of art that are deeply personal objects meant to be held and used.
